The Corals

Favosites, extinct genus of corals that were most common during the Silurian and Devonian periods and have washed down to central and southern New Jersey during the last ice age. On occasion these corals show up in the gravel of the local streams but are not part of the fossil fauna of central and southern New Jersey. For these reasons I've listed them apart from the other NJ corals. Favosites is easily recognized by its distinctive honeycomb appearance earning it the common name "honeycomb coral".
