FISH TAIL VERTS

Summer 2011
Monmouth County, NJ
Tertiary

Just something a little out of the ordinary for New Jersey, fish tail vertebrae. These two verts were found on  back to back outings and so far are the only ones that I've found.

My first fish tail vertebrae.

Hypural: bone to which are attached the spiny rays of the caudal fin of a fish

This one was damaged by my shovel and glued back together.
The slight gold color in this photograph is the result of pyrite replacement.
